I can improve on the definition for 'Gate Valves': A gate valve, sometimes referred to as a sluice valve, is a flow enabling or shut-off device that consists of a rectangular or round plate, operated by a crank, or an actuator, located on the outside of the valve. The actuator is used to close or open the pathway inside of a pipe or other fluid transportation apparatus. Some gate valves can even be used to regulate the flow and pressure of materials.
